Summary: Abstinence Viewed as Healthy Personal
Choice by Teens When Given Facts
Abstinence education program, Game
Plan, successful in teaching teens about the benefit of abstinence.
-
"Game Plan" is an
innovative abstinence education program that is offered within the
regular classroom setting and taught by the school's own faculty.
The goals of this particular program are to build participating
youths' knowledge about abstinence until marriage, to recognize its
potential benefits in terms of health and well-being, and to decide
for themselves that abstinence is the healthiest choice. Prior to
the program, 56.8% of the students recognized as the only 100%
effective protection from the possible physical, emotional, mental,
and social consequences of sex before marriage, compared to 86.8%
after the program. It also appears that following the participation
in the program, the majority of youth stated that they believe
abstinence is a healthy personal choice (58.1% before the program
versus 86.1% after the program). Finally, before participating in
the program, 55% of students reported planning to save sexual
activity for marriage; but after the program 66.8% of students said
the same.1
